Overview[]

The 5th Column was one of the most powerful villain groups in the world. Shortly after Issue 3 went live, the Council completed a hostile takeover where the war spilled over into the streets of Paragon City. Any 5th Column members that didn't join the Council were killed or went into hiding. All of the arch-villains in the 5th Column joined with the Council. This included their leader, Requiem, as well as Nosferatu and Vandal.

Though the villain group was effectively removed with the introduction of the Council in Issue 3, they have made a reappearance with Issue 11. During "The Ouroboros Initiation" story arc given by The Pilgrim, The 5th Column appear as the enemy group when the player travels back in time 15 years. Building upon their re-introduction here, the 5th Column made a somewhat more relevent appearance in Issue 12 when they acted as the power behind Romulus Augustus's sudden rise to power. During the course of the Imperious Task Force it becomes apparent that the Column is far from defunct; they have simply gone underground into the mists of time, establishing what Requiem refers to as "temporal fortresses" throughout time.

5th Column banners also still occur in certain Portal Corp missions when traveling to Council controlled earths, where the 5th Column banner can be seen on buildings along with the Council insignia.

Background[]

Fifth Column Logo

Before they were taken over by the Council, The Fifth Column stood as the last remaining threat from World War II, a group of super powered fascists still fighting a war the rest of the world left behind fifty years ago. The Fifth Column has the nefarious distinction of actually triggering the United States' involvement in the war against Nazi Germany. Hitler first sent the covert super team to Paragon City in 1939, tasked with spying on and sabotaging US shipping and naval development.

In 1941, as the navy's Atlantic Fleet mustered in Paragon Harbor with a convoy of supply vessels destined for England, the Fifth Column struck. The attack force destroyed dozens of ships and injured thousands before they withdrew into hiding. The Nazi spies spent the rest of the war wreaking havoc up and down the Eastern seaboard, fighting countless skirmishes with America's own heroes. Under the leadership of the ruthless and deadly Requiem, the Fifth Column killed hundreds and cost the US millions in war materials. In the closing months of the war they became desperate and careless, and heroes like The Statesman brought most of the covert cadre to justice.

Under the leadership of its founder and former leader Requiem, they spent the next several decades building its resources and power base. There is some evidence that the group helped incite social discord and fostered criminal groups across the country. These activities provided the Fifth Column with a continual supply of new recruits and funds for research.

It is only in the months after the end of the Rikti Invasion, that the Fifth Column resurfaced. An individual claiming the name and authority of the war criminal Requiem appeared to be in charge and may in fact be the same person who originally led the group. He has declared all out war on the United States and Paragon City in particular. The group operates out of underground bases and safe houses secreted throughout the city. Thus far, attacks have generally been aimed at frightening the population and disrupting the city's infrastructure. Captured Fifth Column soldiers have revealed little about their organization's plans except that Requiem has only begun to unfold his intentions for the city.

Current rumors are circulating that the 5th Column will rise again. Even if this was true, under whose leadership will it be?

The Steel Valkyrie class Hoverbot is one of the 5th Column's more ingeniuos inventions. Rumor has it that Vandal was inspired by the Rikti attack drones, but there have been versions of the machines in sevice since WW II. Mounted with omni-directional jets and banks of armor piercing rockets, the Steel Valkyries are quite maneuverable and pack a deadly punch. They can make the skies a very dangerous place.

Vandal's 5th Column Mek Man

Vandal, the genius behind the 5th Column's technology, created the first Mek Men during World War II. He's been improving on them ever since. The tough and deadly versions in operation today are 100 times more dangerous that their predecessors of 60 years ago. Modern Mek Men have tough, thick armor, redundant systems that resist damage, and a powerful onboard AI that makes them faster and smarter than most human soldiers.

The Vampyri are not true vampires at all. They are instead the ultimate result of the 5th Column's super soldier program. It takes a full year of chemical treatmets and surgical enhancements to create a single vampyr, but the result is one of the most deadly killing machines in the world. All Vampyri have incredible strenght, speed and resilence. The Vampyr Mesmerist has potent hypnotic abilities that entrance enemies and render them helpless.

Only those Nebel soldiers who have proven both resilent and trustworthy achieve the rank of Unteroffizier or "Underofficer". Throufgh their skill in combat and their dedication to the 5th Column's cause, they have begun to earn real respect from their masters. In return, they receive better equipment and training, and are trusted with some low level secrets.

A high-ranking Nebel Elite Unteroffizier is a force to be reckoned with. His increased physical prowess is now matched by improved tactical skills and the steely resolve of a combat veteran. The super soldier serum and attendant propaganda have left the soldier utterly devoted to the 5th Column's cause. He is willing to follow any orders, and he seldom worries about the messy consequences.

The pinnacle of frontline soldiers, the Ubermenschen Unteroffiziers are nearly unstoppable fighting machines. It often takes an anti-tank weapon just to faze one of these juggernauts. Fortunately, their numbers are small, though the 5th Column keeps making more of them as their soldiers become more experienced.

The Nacht Unteroffizier have completed their covert ops training and are on the verge of being promoted to Elite status. They have yet to benefit from a course of super soldier serum, but they have honed their stealth and physique to a near perfect level. Unteroffizier are often tasked with leading squads of Nacht soldiers on raids to raise the funds for the 5th Column.

A Nacht Elite at the peak of his game may earn the rank of Unteroffizier, and with it a large upgrade in super soldier serum. He is in the verge of Ubermensch status, and his mind has becomed focused with laser-like intensity. High ranking Elites are some of the best shots and most dedicated insurgents in the world. They can, and have, assasinated heads of state as well as world famous heroes.

Unlike their conterparts in the other branches of the 5th Column hierachy, the Nacht Ubermenschen Unteroffizier have considerable autonomy. The 5th Column feels that the subversive activities that fall within the Nacht's purview require a certain ammount of independence. This makes the Nacht Ubermenschen quite unpredictable at times - and thus, quite deadly.

5th Column Raserei Division Unteroffizier

Raserei Unteroffiziers are zealots in every sense of the word. They believe in the 5th Column creed so fiercely that they have become experts at recruiting new members from the disaffected elements of society. Raserei Unteroffizier are in equal part soldier and proselytizer.

The Elite Raserei Unteroffizier are those destined for positions of autorithy in the 5th Column hierachy. Their autorithy supercedes nearly every other rank. These Unteroffizier reward the 5th Column with fanatical devotion to the cause. By the time someone has reached this lofty level, they have given up any semblance of a normal life. They belong to the Column, body and soul.

Raserei Ubermenschen Unteroffizier have the responsability of leading large numbers of troops. They are concerned with training their men into peak fighting form - and recruiting new members to the cause. Until recently, none have ever been taken alive by the authorities.

Mk I Wolfpack Robot[]

The Mk I Wolfpack robot has been favorably compared to a battle tank when it comes to both firepower and resilience. The big difference is that the Mk I is controlled by an ingenious artificial intelligence that can capably command troops in the field. It carries enough firepower to take out heavily armored targets, and its own armor stands up to anything less than an anti-tank weapon.

The Vampyri Adjutants are soldiers who have been promoted from the Ubermenschen ranks and given the singular honor of becoming a Vampyr. The Nightwolf Champion has lost all of his humanity to whatever force transformed him into a monstrous killing machine. Unlike the more sedate Nightwolf warriors, the champions are in a wild state and can barely be controlled. They are berserkers, unwilling to obey any orders when their enemy is in sight. They are, however, nearly impossible to kill, which makes up for their disobedient nature.

Those gifted with incredible accuracy are quickly transferred into the Nacht division, where they undergo lenghty treatments to refine their abilities. The leaders of the Nebel Elite are near perfect soldierly specimens. In addition to the normal super soldier serum, they receive a special formula that enhances intellect and problem solving skills. An Elite Oberst is utterly devoted to the 5th Column's cause, and he can finally be trusted to lead his soldiers without direction from above.

A Nacht Oberst is responsible for overseeing squads of covert operatives. Since covert ops need to be precise and perfectly executed, a Nacht Oberst is valued chiefly for his ability to follow orders precisely and make sure his troops do the same. In return for loyalty and good service, Oberst receive their first taste of super soldier serum, making them stronger and quicker than any normal human could be.

Nacht Elite Oberst[]

While most Elites concentrate on learning the basic skills required for special ops, the Obersts receive additional training in tactics. They're also trained in technological skills, such as wire tapping and circumventing security systems. Combined with their prodigious super soldier enhancements, these skills make Elite Obersts well-prepared to plan and carry out small covert ops.

The Nacht Ubermenschen Obersts author their own plans to sow terror and fear across Paragon City. Many are in command of small military cells, completely cut off from their compatriots - both for the sake of security, and to encourage independent thinking.

The Raserei Obersts are the living essence of the 5th Column's beliefs. While the Unteroffizier brim with enthusiasm, the Obersts radiate a palpable aura of danger. The Raserei carefully foster this mystique in order to keep order within the ranks of the 5th Column.

The Raserei Elite Obersts are among the few soldiers permitted to express their opinions to the 5th Column's leaders, though most wisely avoid doing so. They control almost all the internal operations of the 5th Column organization.

The Raserei Ubermenschen Obersts make up the inner circle that surrounds the 5th Column's leadership. They are charged with the grand stratagems that further the ultimate goal of the 5th Column: the eventual domination of the world. The leaders of the Column foster a competitiveness between these high ranking officers in order to prevent any single one of them from acquiring too much power and becoming a threat.

The ultimate in automated fighting systems, the Mk II Wolfpack robot is fearsome in combat, capable of taking on whole armored companies by itself. The robots' unerring aim and large caliber weaponry make them a threat to any hero they come across. Their enhanced AI allows them to coordinate with the 5th Column's human troops, making them the perfect battlefield commanders.

The Vampyri Commandants are the assistants to Nosferatu, the man responsible for the 5th Column's super soldier program. Vampyri Commandants are scientists as well as super soldiers, and have a hand in the creation of other Vampyri. They often personalize their own transformation process, giving themselves special abilities and powers that lesser beings can only dream of.

As a child, Vincenzo Alferi dreamed of becoming a great composer, but those dreams were shattered when he lost his hearing due to a car accident. The 5th Column offered to perform a radical experiment that might restore his hearing, and Vincenzo agreed without hesitation. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. An Arachnos attack on the facility resulted in a power surge at the worst possible moment. Instead of restoring him, the resulting explosion created a permanent resonance in Vincenzo's body. He agreed to join the 5th Column if they would give him the opportunity for vengeance against Arachnos.

The fiend known as Vandal was once a humble tinkerer named Othman Doul. In the late 1930's, the villain Requiem recognized Doul's usefulness and recruited him to the nascent 5th Column. Othman was happy to oblige, since it meant he could indulge his scientific curiosity without restraint. Over the years, Vandal has mechanically augmented himself to prolong his lifespan. Now, he seeks to advance his own position within the 5th Column and perhaps even challenge Requiem for supremacy.

Few truly appreciate the genius of Nosferatu's super soldier program, and none more so than himself. Nosferatu was so entranced by his ability to create the super strong Vampyri that he became one of them. He has since improved upon his original design by granting himself several new abilities. He can mesmerize his opponents, leaving them helpless. Some say he can even siphon off the life force of his foes.

Ridolfo Uzzano has come a long way from his humble beginning as one of Mussolini's lapdogs. The primary cause of his success was his fusion with a Nictus, a being of utter darkness. The Nictus gave Ridolfo the ability to scorch his foes with an infernal fire. Though he is now over 100 years old, Requiem remains a fearsome foe in battle.

Though he is technically an Archvillain, Reichsman is presented in his own category "Reichsman", and possesses Hit points well above any other AV or Monster of his same level, exceeding 200,000+HP.

This Marcus Cole, from an alternate dimension, was a rogue and a mercenary who was exposed to mustard gas during World War I. In search of a cure for the effects of the gas, Marcus discovered the Well of the Furies. He drank from the well and was granted incredible powers. Adopting the persona of Reichsman, Marcus used these powers in the service of the Axis powers on his world, leading them to victory over their foes. When he discovered the existence of another Earth, he traveled there and was defeated and imprisoned by the Freedom Phalanx. Now he's back, and ready for revenge.
